Halloween Subitizing Slides for Kindergarten | Math Warm-Up & Number Talks
Build number sense in just 5–8 minutes a day this Halloween week!
Halloween Count! is a ready-to-project subitizing warm-up for kindergarten. Each day, students see a group of Halloween objects for just 3 seconds, then explain what they saw and how they saw it. The quick flash keeps them from counting one by one and pushes them to see amounts: the skill that grows into part-part-whole thinking and early addition.
How it works:
Every image follows the same simple 4-step routine, so students know exactly what to do:
Eyes Up! Students get ready to look.
Quick Look: The image flashes for 3 seconds, then advances on its own. A bar at the bottom of the slide shows the time counting down.
Think: Students show a quiet thumb when they know how many.
How Did You See It? Students share their thinking while you loop their groupings and fill in the sentence frame right on your interactive whiteboard.
What's included:
PowerPoint slide deck: 5 days, 42 Quick Looks (176 slides)
Built-in 3-second auto-advance timer on every Quick Look slide
Write-on "How Did You See It?" slides with sentence frames ("I see _____." or "_____ and ___ make ___".) and a number box.
Completed model examples on Day 1 to show students how to share their thinking
5-page teacher guide with:
A quick explanation of perceptual vs. conceptual subitizing
The daily routine and facilitation tips
Teacher-talk prompts
"What to Listen For" to tell subitizing apart from counting
Tips for handling incorrect answers
A Week at a Glance with each day's subitizing amounts, mathematical focus and starting slide number
Week at a Glance:
Day 1: Amounts 1–5 in simple arrangements
Day 2: Introduces the five-frame (2–5)
Day 3: Mixed arrangements and five-frames (2–5)
Day 4: Amounts shown in two groups, with 6 as "5 and 1" as a challenge (2–6)
Day 5: Review, including 6 as "3 and 3" (1–6)
Standards:
K.CC.B.4: Connect counting to cardinality
K.CC.B.5: Count to answer "how many?"
K.OA.A.3: Decompose numbers into pairs
Perfect for:
✔ Math warm-ups and number talks
✔ Whole-group calendar or carpet time
✔ Halloween week and October math
Please note:
This resource requires Microsoft PowerPoint. Present in Slide Show mode so the 3-second timing works. Unfortunately, Google Slides and Keynote won't keep the timing.
